A'Nya is a returning counselor for both our Gateway and Steps programs and is excited to help students achieve their goals. She is passionate about helping students explore and deepen their passions through extracurricular activities, volunteering opportunities, and eventually in their college application essays. A’Nya has worked as a mentor for first-year students in the Minority Advisory Program at UNC-Chapel Hill. In this time, she helped students get acclimated to college life and provided resources for whatever they needed. She has also assisted graduating students from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education in discovering post-secondary education goals. Through her MSW education, A'Nya has worked at a public school with the school social worker where she helped work through mental and behavioral concerns with students. Informally, she is always the go-to by her friends and family for editing essays, resume review, mock interviewing, and potential building.
Counseling Philosophy:
“I think it is important to remember that everything we need in this world is already inside of us. Sometimes we need some help and guidance to shine the lights on those strong parts. Along with that help and guidance, learning how to find your voice and be your biggest advocate is my sole goal in counseling.”
Teaching Experience:
During her time at UNC and at Columbia, A’Nya assist in essay editing and study groups. She has done individual tutoring with students in high school math, essay editing, and reading/writing skills. Her teaching style gives them empowerment while they navigate their learning style and integrate new information.
Educational Philosophy:
“Everything we know in this world has been taught to us by somebody. I hope to give my students not only educational skills, but life skills that they can take with them throughout their life. Learning and growing is an amazing human quality and I want my students to find the joy in that.”
Interesting Fact:
A'Nya's favorite pastime is reading a good book or trying a new recipe.
