University of Texas at Austin (Ph.D. in Comparative Literature)

As an undergraduate student at Mills College Emma worked as a peer tutor for the English and French departments, helping students polish essays and review grammar. In graduate school, Emma worked as a Teaching Assistant and Assistant Instructor, helping students become strong critical readers and writers. Since graduating, Emma has been working as a tutor to help high school students apply to colleges, assisting them with everything from test prep to admissions essays.

Counseling Philosophy:

"My favorite part of working with students is getting to know them and learning about their interests and skills. In my many years as a teacher I have learned that it can be hard for young people to feel confident in their knowledge and abilities. I love working with students to build their confidence, and to help them identify the strengths they can share with college admissions teams.”

Teaching Experience:

At the University of Texas at Austin, Emma worked as a Teaching Assistant for the English department before becoming an Assistant Instructor for the Department of Rhetoric & Writing. Emma taught a college composition course for four years, working primarily with first year students new to college writing.

Teaching Philosophy:

“I believe that the best learning comes from trust and encouragement. My favorite part of being a teacher is building relationships with my students, and providing them with the respect and care that they need to feel confident in their learning.”

Interesting Fact:

Emma grew up in Germany and speaks five languages.
